Autumn 2011 Preview

Because ‘Fall’ is for losers.

Bakuman 2

Bakuman 2

Studio: J.C. Staff | Directors: Kenichi Kasai & Noriaki Akitaya | Genre: Drama, Romance
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

The sequel to the popular Bakuman series, originally written and illustrated by author Ohba Tsugmi and artist Obata Takeshi respectively. This is undoubtedly a must-watch if you enjoyed the first season, but if you have had no prior experience of Bakuman then there is unlikely to be anything worth your while, and you should give this a miss.

processr
processr

A continuation of the trials and tribulations of Moritaka Mashiro and Akito Takagi in the world of writing manga. Season 2 will presumably pick up where the first left off, with their series Detective Trap being picked up for serialisation. Bakuman is a popular series, and one that is unlikely to go off the rails with a second run, but it’s just not for me.

Ben-To

Ben-To

Studio: David Production | Director: Shin Itagaki | Genre: Action, Comedy
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

A series mainly focused on the wacky adventures of our hero, highschooler Sato Yo, buying bento at a local supermarket, with each day being a life-and-death battle for the ultimate prize – the fabled half price bento! The premise itself is amusing enough, and chances are that there will be some good comedy to be found. Count me in!

“From the director of Mayoi Neko Overrun!” is hardly a sentence to inspire too much confidence, but Ben-To has been very successful in the light novel market – it was listed as the fifth most popular series in the 2011 poll by the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! (‘This Light Novel is Amazing!’) guidebook. This will probably be wildly popular, but it’s not really for me.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

Otherwise known as I Don’t Have Many Friends. Two schoolmates who find it hard to make friends set up the Neighbours’ Club, designed for those without many friends. This was even higher on the aforementioned 2011 Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! poll than Ben-To was, second only to Index. Again, this is bound to be popular, but it probably won’t be my cup of tea.

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

A romantic comedy that will be directed by AIC Build. Based on a series of light novels, this series boasts cute character designs, backed with a very strong cast featuring the likes of Marina Inoue and Kana Hanazawa. I have some pretty high expectations of this one, so let’s hope it lives up to them.

C³

Studio: Silver Link | Director: Shin Oonuma | Genre: Comedy, School

Highschooler Yachi Haruaki receives a black cube from his father, but during the night discovers a naked girl in his kitchen! She is the human form of the cube, an instrument of torture known as Fear in Cube. The pair fight together against similar duos of instruments and their owners. A school battle comedy with ecchi elements. Pass.

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

The studio in charge of this happens to be Silver Link, who are best known for the Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu series. The director, Shin Oonuma, has been quite successful in pulling off a comedy, but it should be interesting to see if he can manage the same in this action-based show.

Chihayafuru

Chihayafuru

Studio: Madhouse | Director: Morio Asaka | Genre: Drama, Sports
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

processr
processr

After her sister becomes a model, high school girl Chihaya Ayase is inspired by a new classmate to take up the card game of karuta competitively. What do Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits and Nana have in common? All three were directed by Morio Asaka, so expect a series similar in tone to those. In my opinion this is one series to look out for in the summer lineup.

Fate/zero

Fate/zero

Studio: Ufotable | Director: Ei Aoki | Genre: Action, Fantasy
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

processr
processr

Prequel to Fate/stay night. Fate/zero takes place 10 years prior to the events of Fate/stay night, detailing the events of the 4th Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City. I know precisely nothing about the Fate/ series, but I do know that zero’s director, Ei Aoki, has some pedigree, having directed Wandering Son and Ga-Rei: Zero to critical acclaim. Fans of the series will be interested, but I’m not.

Guilty Crown

Guilty Crown

Studio: Production I.G | Director: Tetsurou Ataki | Genre: Action

Taking place in 2039 Tokyo, a 17 year-old boy with a psychic power in his right hand, Ohma Shu, finds himself embroiled in a battle against the government after meeting a girl named Inori Yuzuriha, who happens to be part of an opposing resistance force. Looks intriguing enough for me to pick up.

processr
processr

I scarcely need to tell you that this should be good. The director of Death Note, the screenwriter of Code Geass and one of the best animation studios team up in the prestigious noitaminA slot with an original anime production; the promotional trailer is gorgeous. If you watch just one show this season, then watch Guilty Crown. You sheep.

Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter

Studio: Madhouse | Director: Tetsurou Ataki | Genre: Action, Adventure
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

A popular, long-running series following the adventures of Gon Freecss, a young Hunter. Having sold over 52 million copies in Japan as of August of this year and having been made into an anime series before, including 30 OVA episodes, it will be welcomed by fans. I’ve never seen the original version of Hunter x Hunter however, so I’m passing on this as well.

Kimi to Boku.

Kimi to Boku.

Studio: J.C. Staff | Director: Mamoru Kanbe | Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

processr

Cute boys doing cute things… wait, what? A story about the everyday lives of five high school boys from the director of Elfen Lied and Denpa Teki na Kanojo, of all things. Expect howls of outrage at even the slightest hint of romance between any of the boys from the same sort of people who will happily imagine Ritsu and Mio going at it like dogs in heat.

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon

In the distant future, Japan is divided into feudal territories and conquered by other countries. On a floating city – Musashi – a war that will determine the fate of the world will be fought. Minoru Kawakimi is no stranger to the light novel scene, having penned the popular Owari no Chronicle series, but this is the first of his works to be adapted for the screen.

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

A post-apocalyptic light novel series which is set in the far future. The studio in charge is Sunrise, which kind of surprises me because I have never heard of Sunrise animating a light novel. There’s probably some mecha action or something though, given their track record.

Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing

Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing

Studio: Gonzo | Director: Kouichi Chigura | Genre: Adventure, Fantasy
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

This has no relation to the original Last Exile series, created by Gonzo back in 2003, instead following the adventures of new characters Fam and Giselle, throughout their journey in the Last Exile universe. The plot seems fairly interesting but not enough to convince me to pick this up.

processr
processr

A sequel of sorts to the original Last Exile series; while the story is set within the same universe, there will be all new characters and new designs. A pilot, Fam, and her navigator, Giselle, pilot their vanship, Vespa, through the skies. Fans of the original will be pleased to hear that Last Exile’s director and character designers will return for Silver Wing.

Maken-Ki!

Yet another romantic comedy with action and battles in it, this will unlikely break the traditional mould set by others of its kind, but I’d personally pick this because it’s purely for enjoyment – you’ll not find any ground-breaking plots or anything plot-heavy in it.

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

I’m sure many would have wanted this series to be animated. This series ended late last year, so there is plenty of material to adapt and therefore no need for filler episodes à la the original Fullmetal Alchemist. This is probably the horror fix for this season and it does have some good action in it.

processr
processr

A full length adaptation of the highly-rated manga by Sakae Esuno, after the OVA that was bundled with the manga’s eleventh volume in December. It’s fair to say that the OVA wasn’t received all that well, but I have high hopes for this two-cours version. I predict that while this will be a highlight of the season, I fear manga fans will feel let down.

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE

Studio: Sunrise | Director: Susumu Yamaguchi | Genre: Action, Mecha
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

Yet another in the line of the long-running and popular Gundam series. I have never been able to fathom what the allure of the series was, even after watching a few episodes of Gundam Seed. So once again, I’ll pass on this.

processr
processr

A new Mobile Suit Gundam series, centring on three generations of pilots – Furitto Asuno, his son Asemu and their descendent Kio. What else is there to say? It’s Gundam. If you like Gundam, chances are you’ll like this. If you don’t, then this is unlikely to sway you. I personally don’t care for Gundam, but there you go.

Persona 4 The Animation

Persona 4 The Animation

Studio: AIC A.S.T.A | Director: Seiji Kishi | Genre: Adventure, Mystery
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

Adapted from the popular PlayStation 2 game, this will be animated by AIC A.S.T.A. and directed by Seiji Kishi, who also directed Angel Beats!, which is a good start. I certainly hope they take a good direction for this series. A veritable feast for the eyes, and one of my picks for this season.

processr
processr

An anime adaptation of the popular Playstation 2 game Persona 4 (known as Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 in the West). This oozes with style from every pore – I mean just look. dat PV, mirite? If you watch just one show this season… well, watch Guilty Crown, but watch Persona 4 whenever you have a spare twenty minutes. You won’t regret it.

Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle

Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle

Studio: Sunrise | Director: Jun’ichi Satou | Genre: Action, Game
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

processr
processr

As quick as I usually am to dismiss most shounen shows, this actually looks rather promising. A highschool boy who loves puzzles is led into ruins where an ‘unsolvable puzzle’ lies. It is a trap set by the danger ‘POG’ society, and is the beginning of a puzzle battle against them. The art looks a bit weird, but I’m actually faintly hopeful for Phi Brain. It’s worth a first look at least.

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

A rare kind of show in its own right, this happens to be an educational series. It is mostly about puzzle-solving and if you’re the type who loves solving puzzles, do give this a try. Given that I have to be wary of picking up too many series, I’ll pass on this.

Shakugan no Shana III (Final)

Shakugan no Shana III (Final)

AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

processr
processr

The third season of Shakugan no Shana. (Or is it the fourth…? Bleh.) I’ve not seen anything of the Shakugan no Shana series, but from what I can tell (read: what the My Anime List rankings can tell me) the first two series were received pretty well. III is being directed by the same guy who did all the other ones, so expect more of the same I guess?

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

The long-awaited third season for the Shakugan no Shana series of light novels. A couple of years have passed and many false announcements later, it’s finally airing. I’m not going to be watching this since I missed much of the first two seasons.

Shinryaku!? Ika Musume

Shinryaku!? Ika Musume

Studio: Diomedea | Directors: Tsutomu Mizushima & Yasutaka Yamamoto | Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

processr
processr

A second season of the Ika Musume series (so many sequels this season!). Pollution of the world’s oceans forces Ika Musume, a squid girl, to leave the sea to exact revenge on humanity. After damaging a beach house, however, she finds herself working for its owners. I’m sure this will be drastically different from the first season–hahano. I didn’t see the first series, so I won’t be watching the second.

Tamayura: Hitotose

Tamayura: Hitotose

Studio: Hal Film Maker | Director: Jun’ichi Satou | Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

processr

Fu Sawatari moves to Takehara, near Hiroshima – the town where her late father grew up. Tamayura: Hitotose follows her both as she comes to love her name home and in her passion for photography. This soft, mellow style of series isn’t for everyone, but I love them if they’re done right. Consequently I’m rather looking forward to Tamayura: Hitotose.

Un-Go

Un-Go

Studio: Bones | Director: Seiji Mizushima | Genre: Mystery
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

Based on Sakaguchi Ango’s novel “Meiji Kaika Ango Torimonocho”, this show seems to be very reminiscent of Gosick, what with having a similar plot involving detectives and mysterious cases. It’s animated by Bones and is part of the noitaminA program block. However, I’ll probably pass on this to avoid overloading my already sizeable load.

processr
processr

Un-Go is a detective show set in the Meiji era. Shinjuro Yuki and a small boy named Inga solve mysteries. Yes, noitaminA are treading the same ground as Gosick. And God’s Notebook. And Dantalian. “But Un-Go has a small boy instead of a small girl!” I hear you cry. I don’t care. This format has been done to death by now. But noitaminA. ┐(´∀`)┌

Working’!!

Working'!!

Studio: A-1 Pictures | Director: Atsushi Ootsuki | Genre: Comedy
AniDB | Anime News Network | My Anime List | Official Site

rapidpotential
rapidpotential

Sequel to Working!!, a yonkoma (four-panel comic) which was made an anime in Spring 2010, it focuses on the wacky daily lives of the employees working at Wagnaria, a family restaurant. Do watch this if you’ve enjoyed the first season – I know I did, and will be picking this one up.

processr
processr

Yet another sequel! This time to Spring 2010′s Working!! (because adding an apostrophe in a silly place makes for a unique title I guess?). At a family restaurant in Hokkaido, Takanashi Souta works part-time along with his strange co-workers. More of the same blah blah blah. You know the score by now.

And thus ends Anipulse’s preview for the upcoming season! After a few false starts it’s my pleasure to welcome my good friend Chris (rapidpotential) to the team. He’ll be covering some of the shows that I don’t give a crap about (read: Maken-Ki!, fuck that shit) for their first episodes as well as blogging one or two for the whole season. Welcome!

  2. Sadly, pantsu just makes the anime industry more money. That and incest–

A-anyways, I watched the first season of Squid Girl, so definitely looking forward to the second. I am also looking forward to Persona 4. Hopefully it doesn’t disappoint…

    • Pantsu and incest: shikata ga nai~

Persona 4: My biggest fear with this is that out will be style over substance like [C] – pretty to watch, but not a storytelling tour de force.

  4. *even* after watching a few episodes of *Gundam Seed*
    This is your problem.

If you like Gundam, chances are you’ll like this.
Not really, as this series is aimed at a younger audience as be seen by the character and mech design while it remains to be seen if AGE will have a deep and tragic storyline, reminiscent of the gundam franchise:

    http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z414/indi311/gundam-age-005.jpg

As opposed to the UC timeline gundam series currently airing, gundam unicorn:

    Rant over.

Neither of you like gundam though, so obviously your response to the anime’s unveiling are forgivable :P
